Third World

AED 750

the Story
This powerful vintage Chinese propaganda poster titled “Third World” (第三世界) dates back to the late 1960s–1970s, a time when China positioned itself as the ideological leader of developing nations during the Cold War. The artwork reflects Mao Zedong’s Three Worlds Theory, which divided the globe into superpowers, developed nations, and the emerging “Third World.”

At the center, a massive red fist symbolizing the collective strength of the Third World crushes two caricatured enemies: “American Imperialism” (美帝) and “Soviet Revisionism” (苏修). Bold slogans declare:

  • “The people of the world cannot be bullied” (世界人民不可欺)

  • “The Chinese people cannot be insulted” (中国人民不可辱)

This striking imagery demonstrates how art was used to mobilize ideology, assert national pride, and reinforce China’s stance against both the United States and the Soviet Union during the Sino-Soviet split.
