the Story
Naya Daur (1957) is a legendary Hindi social-drama directed and produced by B.R. Chopra, celebrated for its powerful portrayal of the clash between tradition and industrial progress in post-independence India. The film stars Dilip Kumar as Shankar, a proud horse-cart driver whose livelihood is threatened when a wealthy businessman introduces a modern bus service to the village. Determined to defend the dignity of human labor, Shankar challenges the businessman’s son, Kundan, to an unforgettable race between a humble horse-cart and a roaring motor bus. Supported by the entire village, the community unites to build a road for the contest, symbolizing resilience, solidarity, and social justice. With its emotional depth and enduring message, Naya Daur became one of the highest-grossing Indian films of 1957 and is widely regarded as an inspiration for the Academy Award-nominated film Lagaan (2001).
